The ambitious young entrepreneur opened a retail shop in the front of his rented house in Santa Cruz, California, where backpackers and travelers could get custom-fit, made-to-order packs that were personally constructed by Mike over the course of several days. As the demand for perfectly fitting backpacks grew, Osprey eventually moved to its current location in Southwest Colorado.
